Progress on Electric Vehicle Charging

Plans for a major expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging points across Somerset have reached an important milestone, thanks to a £3.6 million funding deal aimed at boosting sustainable transport options for residents.

The programme, supported by Somerset Council, will see new charge points installed at key sites, including Burnham-on-Sea, to ensure that local communities have access to reliable and affordable EV infrastructure. A particular focus is being placed on 7kW chargers, which are more practical for overnight charging by residents compared with faster but more costly alternatives.

Commenting on the plans, Lib Dem Cllr Ganesh Gudka, a town councillor for Burnham & Highbridge said:
“I am pleased to see these EV chargers moving forward, especially with an emphasis on the more affordable 7kW units, which are much better suited to the needs of local residents for overnight charging. I also note that Oxford Street car park remains one of the planned locations.”

Other local Lib Dem Town Councillors are also keen to see further investment spread across the area. Cllr Barbara Vickers added:
“We hope Bank Street in Highbridge will also be considered for investment soon.”

The rollout of new charging points is part of a county-wide initiative to support the transition to cleaner vehicles, cut emissions, and make it easier for residents to charge their cars close to home.
