Better Buses for Burnham-On-Sea & Highbridge!
Your Lib Dem team working for real change in local transport
Local transport is at the heart of community life – and thanks to residents, local colleges, and dedicated campaigners, we’re seeing real progress in Burnham & Highbridge!
Lib Dem Councillor Lesley Millard saw first-hand how badly local bus services were letting people down.
“I was talking to residents and realised there was a major problem with buses,” Lesley explained. “So, I asked anyone interested to come to a meeting. We then invited First Bus and Somerset Council to come and answer our questions. I also did an interview on Radio Somerset – apparently, the CEO of First Bus heard it and made all her leadership come to our meeting!”
That initial meeting sparked a chain of positive change. From there, regular meetings were set up with First Bus, creating a space for local voices to be heard.
When it became clear that students were struggling to get to college, the team brought in Weston College and Bridgwater & Taunton College. The response was brilliant – Bridgwater & Taunton have been regularly attending meetings ever since.
✅ Real Improvements Secured
Your Burnham & Highbridge Lib Dem team, in partnership with the Local Bus User Group, have been working hard to secure funding and improvements through the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). Here’s what’s now in place:
- 🕥 Extended Timetable: The No. 21 service now runs until 10:30 PM, giving more flexibility for work, college, and social trips.
- 📱 Slinky Goes Digital: The Slinky demand-responsive service is being digitised, making bookings quicker and more flexible.
- ⚡ New Electric Buses: A modern fleet of electric buses is being rolled out, helping to improve reliability and reduce emissions.
- 🚏 Better Signage: Wayfinding from the train station is being improved, making public transport easier to navigate.
💬 Keeping Up the Momentum
We’re proud of what’s been achieved – but we’re not stopping here.
